In “Mountain Flora” Grace explores the juxtaposition between the minute detail and monumentality of the high country and mountainous landscapes of Tasmania.
Scale, light and colour are employed to convey a sense of the vast, yet detailed landscape elements.
Many make pilgrimages to these unique alpine regions, experiencing a type of transcendency through the meditative experience of walking with nature.
The essence of these remote and wild places revealing a constantly morphing momentary beauty.
Through Grace’s newest works, we are transported to these encapsulating moments within the ever changing landscapes, through her flowers from the mountain.

This hand painted original linocut features the Tasmanian Waratah.

Tasmanian Waratahs grow wild on the slopes of kunanyi/Mt Wellington where Grace lives in southern Tasmania. They flower in late spring when their bright red colour seems to glow on the bush. Here Grace beautifully conveys it’s intense colour, and the little idiosyncrasies that make it such a special native, hand-carving lino, and printing with oil based printing ink onto Stonehenge paper.

The artists selection of the deep kraft-coloured Stonehenge paper gives the piece a warmth and depth. Colour and highlights are added with watercolour, each piece individually hand painted.
The image size measures 30cm high (12") x 21 cm wide (approx 8 1/4") with the paper larger as shown.

Each artwork is signed and numbered with the edition limited to 25.

This hand painted original linocut features the Richea Dracophylla.  Richea grow wild on the slopes of kunanyi/Mt Wellington where Grace now lives in Southern Tasmania.  Flowering in spring and their unusual spikes reach out into the bush, on oddly angled branches.

Here Grace captures the movement of the leaves and the little idiosyncrasies that make it such a special native.

Grace has hand-carved lino, and printed with oil based printing ink onto Stonehenge paper.  For this piece, she has chosen the deep kraft-coloured Stonehenge paper, which gives the piece a warmth and depth difficult to capture in photographs. Colour and highlights are added with watercolour, each piece individually hand painted.

"Alpine Summer” is a hand painted linocut inspired by the flowers that proliferate in alpine areas during the Tasmanian Summer.

The vegetation of Tasmanian alpine areas are a fascination for the artist. Grace explores the extraordinary range of textures, shapes and colours that seem almost to be intentionally harmoniously ‘planted’. A focus on the compositional aspects of the placement of the plants, and the rich colouring, translates these into a linocut that seeks to convey the unique sense of place. This piece features, Richea Scoparia with its spiky leaves and vibrant red flowers is set against the deep shadows of the alpine rocks.

The linocut measures approximately 30cm (12") wide by 40cm (18") high, not including signature. The paper is larger still, as pictured. "Alpine Summer, Orites” is a hand painted linocut from a series inspired by the flowers that proliferate in alpine areas during the Tasmanian Summer. Tasmanian alpine areas are a fascination for the artist. In this piece, the Broadleaf Orites, a plant endemic to Tasmania, catches the light while the Richea Scoparia sits in shadow.

‘Summit 7, Summer Shadows’ continues Grace’s Summit Series of kunanyi/Mt Wellington inspired linocuts which began in the winter of 2020. In Summit 7, Grace explores the deep shadows caused by the summer sun as it lowers in the sky. The alpine plants are flowering and the rocks are glowing with the last warm rays of the evening. Grace is drawn into the work, tracing the flow of growth in the plants with different textures, as well as playing with the intense colours of the deep shadows and sun-saturated highlights.

"Summit 4, Scoparia” is the fourth in Grace’s series of linocuts exploring the otherworldly landscape at the summit of Mount Wellington.  Mount Wellington (kunanyi) dominates the landscape of Hobart Tasmania, Grace’s hometown.  Kunanyi’s familiar shape is the backdrop for life in Australia's most southern city, but up on top of the mountain a startlingly different landscape is revealed.  Almost alien, it is dominated by monumental boulders and alpine vegetation. In “Summit 4” the Scoparia flowers are blooming in the foreground. The late afternoon sun causes the rocks to glow, deepening the colour of the shadows, drawing us into the depth of field.

This large hand coloured linocut is the first in a series of linocuts Grace began during the winter of 2020. Mount Wellington (kunanyi) dominates the landscape of Hobart Tasmania, Grace’s hometown. Summit 2 is the second in Grace’s series of linocuts exploring the otherworldly landscape at the summit of kunanyi Mount Wellington. Almost alien, it is dominated by large boulders and alpine vegetation.

The often startling colours and textures of this alpine environment are the subject of this series of linocuts. In Summit 2, the late afternoon light deepens the shadows between the rocks. It’s winter and a collection of snow glows in the foreground.
